arte 342: Elementary School CLINICAL experience
Course Description:
Overview of the history of art and design education and its philosophical premises. Examination of opportunities and various possible approaches in teaching art and design. Study of developmental characteristics of the learner. Practice in use of instructional materials and construction of lesson plans. Directed observation and supervised participation with a variety of populations and circumstances in elementary level school settings for a minimum of 25 hours of clinical experience. Discussion, lecture, and studio.
This course aims to help build a foundation for using the arts as an active process for learning at the elementary level. The course offers experiential and theoretical tools for understanding both creativity and critical thinking in the arts and perspectives as creators of art and design. Pedagogical approaches to the teaching of art and design are explored as they pertain to critical theory, visual culture, and individual pre-service teachers' studio practice.
